Awa Goes to High School...And Beyond
By Fatoumata Kone, Operations Coordinator
Awa Sylla is a a bright, motivated, and courageous young woman from the rural village of Dovong in Mali. Awa recently graduated from the Entrepreneurs Organization Academy in her hometown and is now completing her senior year in the TSCO track at Kadiolo Public High School. Passionate about education, Awa’s story is one of resilience and hope, and I am excited to share it with you.
Awa is a proud recipient of the Mali Rising Inspiration Scholarship. Reflecting on its impact, she shared:
"Education is incredibly important—it teaches us so much about life and helps us achieve our dreams."
When Awa first learned she had been awarded the scholarship, she was overjoyed. The support allowed her to purchase school supplies such as uniforms, books, and a backpack. It even helped her meet basic needs like clothing and food during school. “Thanks to the scholarship, I’ve been able to study in the best possible conditions,” she said.
This scholarship didn’t just support Awa’s education; it gave her family a reason to prioritize it. In Awa’s community, girls’ education is often undervalued. Many families withdraw their daughters from school to marry them off, especially as they grow older. This year, Awa faced a challenge when her uncle wanted her to leave school for marriage. Fortunately, her father stood firmly against it.
“My father promised me I would finish my education,” Awa explained. “He knew the scholarship from Mali Rising made it possible, so he refused to let me give up.”
Awa’s dream is to become a surgeon and build a health center in her village to save lives.
“I am so grateful to the Mali Rising Foundation for helping shape my future. I am determined to honor their support by earning my diploma and making my dream a reality.”
