New Hope Grants Make Change

By Fatoumata Kone, Operations Coordinator

Meet Issa Diarra, a 24-year-old from Tanima and a proud graduate of Mali Rising’s Little Heroes Academy II. Issa is a young electrician, filled with passion and determination for his craft, and his journey embodies the power of resilience and the impact of opportunity.

After graduating from Mali Rising’s Little Heroes Academy II, Issa pursued his dream by enrolling in a vocational school in Bamako. Over two years, he honed his skills and deepened his love for electrical work. Since middle school, Issa had been captivated by electricity, and thanks to his hard work and dedication, he earned his certification.

He began as an apprentice, assisting an entrepreneur in building installations, but he knew he wanted to branch out independently. However, a major hurdle stood in his way—he lacked the financial resources to buy his own equipment.

“One day, I was contacted by Mali Rising Foundation for an interview about the Hope Grant,” Issa recalls. “I was excited but never expected I would actually receive the grant.” When he found out he had been selected, Issa was overjoyed. The grant allowed him to purchase essential tools, including drills, a set of screwdrivers, long-nose pliers, wire strippers, and even maintenance equipment for air conditioners.

“This grant has made an enormous difference in my life,” Issa shares. “Now I’m able to work for myself, without relying on borrowed tools. Last week, I completed an installation job with my own equipment and earned money on my own terms. In the future, I hope to continue growing my business and to help my parents, my sisters, and my village develop.”

Issa also dreams of inspiring other young people in Tanima to learn a trade like electricity, which he finds both fulfilling and profitable. “I am deeply grateful to Mali Rising Foundation for this incredible initiative. By supporting former students in creating their own businesses, they’re not only helping us individually but also uplifting entire communities.”
