Back in April, I had the pleasure of meeting with a great Girl Scout troop here in Salt Lake City. We talked about girls' education in Mali -- the challenges and the benefits. The troop asked great questions and seemed to really understand how powerful education is for women around the world.
After our talk, the Scouts wrote letters of encouragement to girl students participating in Mali Rising's Girls Project in the tiny village of Kolimba. The letters were colorful, thoughtful, and more than a little fun. The basic goal? To simply let our girls know that as they struggled to get to school each day, someone far away was rooting for them.
I think the photos (see slideshow below) I received from the letter delivery in Kolimba speak to how thoroughly the Girls Scouts achieved their goal! Our Girls Project Coordinator, Hindaty, says the girls loved the letters and their messages of strength and power. We hope these thoughts stick with our girls over the summer, and help them with the hard job of returning to school again in the fall.
Thank you Girl Scouts! (Want to involve your troop in projects like this? Sign up for Classroom Connections!)
