I'm excited to officially open the 2018 make the Case for Caring Essay Contest! From January 1 through March 31, high school students around the United States may submit their essay on this year's theme and compete for fame and fortune.
Auction for Action at Thursday's Soiree
We've all done it -- got carried away at a charity auction and come home with a strange trinket we can't fit anywhere in our house or a gift certificate for an adventure we can't imagine ever taking. We shrug and tell ourselves the funds went to a good cause. So why not just directly decide where those funds will go and spare yourself donating the dusty trinket to the thrift store two years later. That's the concept behind the Auction for Action at Mali Rising's Soiree this Thursday.

Utah Girl Scouts Supporting Mali's Girl Students
Back in April, I had the pleasure of meeting with a great Girl Scout troop here in Salt Lake City. We talked about girls' education in Mali -- the challenges and the benefits. The Scouts wrote letters of encouragement to girl students participating in Mali Rising's Girls Project in the tiny village of Kolimba. The basic goal? To simply let our girls know that as they struggled to get to school each day, someone far away was rooting for them. I think the photos I received from the letter delivery in Kolimba speak to how thoroughly the Girls Scouts achieved their goal! Check them out...

Classroom Connections: Applications Due June 15
Calling all teachers, scout leaders, youth group directors, and the ilk! Mali Rising is accepting applications until June 15 to join your young people with ours in Mali. Classroom Connections is a fun way for young people in the United States to learn more about Mali and connect with peers in Mali through hands-on projects.

This is our first annual contest, focused on encouraging high school students to think critically yet compassionately about international issues.
