We Were Overwhelmed With Great Youth Ambassador Applications!

By Merritt Frey, Executive Director

Okay, this isn’t the most substantive blog post ever…but I had to share my excitement. Last week was the deadline for 20/21 Youth Ambassador Project participants and we had SUCH an amazing batch of applicants.

In fact, our applicants were so outstanding we could not bring ourselves to limit the group to just ten Ambassadors. Katie Murphy, Mali Rising board member and Youth Ambassador liaison, and I just could not say no to many of the great kids who applied. As a result, the 20/21 Ambassador class will be nearly double the normal size!

Stay tuned to hear more about the new Ambassadors in the coming week. And we predict you will be hearing A LOT about their great projects all school year long! So exciting.

Announcing the First Ever Speech Up! Video Contest

At Mali Rising, we think young people have the ideas and energy needed to change the world. But all too often, these voices are discounted and ignored. That’s why the Speech Up! contest exists — to give young people a forum to share their ideas for real change that will matter to other young people globally.

Inspiration Scholarships Changing Lives

Students who receive Mali Rising Inspiration Scholarships tell many stories about the impact on their lives. From 2016 until today, more than 50 girls and boys have been able to study thanks to these scholarships.

After 9th grade in Mali, the government chooses the course of study for most students, including our graduates. However, the government does not ever direct any student with to a health school such as a nursing program directly after 9th grade, although these schools privately admit students at this level. According to our students who study in the field of health, only students sponsored by Mali Rising’s Inspiration Scholarships have the chance to continue their studies in health after graduating middle school.

As the school year ends, our Field Director Alou is checking in with our Inspiration Scholarship students to see how they are progressing. Inspiration Scholars are outstanding Mali Rising graduates who receive scholarships to continue their education at high school or in vocational programs. Alou spoke with one Scholar, Cheick Oumar Samake, who shared what his first year at agricultural school has been like.
