Thanks to wonderful support from notebook manufacturer Denik, Denik Middle School opened in 2015 in the little village of Zambougou. Previously, children from Zambougou faced a 6-mile walk on a busy highway to another Mali Rising school. Today they thrive in their very own school.

24/25 Mali Rising priority projects at Denik Middle School: new textbooks, principal support, Little Library rotation, girls’ education support, Alumni Network activities, Inspiration Scholar support, Hope Grant entrepreneurs.

Village background

Zambougou is a small village approximately 50 kilometers south of Mali’s capital, Bamako. The villages is home to nearly 2,000 people, and more than half of those are children. The village is also home to a busy primary school, which we built the new middle school right across from.

Agriculture is the main industry in the village, with most families working their own fields to raise crops. Some also raise livestock such as chickens or cows. Children help in these important endeavors, but parents also value education as a way to give their children more options in the future.
