Making the Girls Project Sustainable...Meet our Girl Leaders!

We love our Girls Project, which strives to recruit more girls into school and retain them there so they have the skills to build the lives they dream off. The Project has been very successful in its initial three pilot villages. We worked in those villages in pilot mode for three years, but are now working with those villages to have them take on the Project in a sustainable way (this will allow us take the Project to five new villages!). As part of that sustainability strategy, we are developing Girl Leaders for each of the pilot villages. These young women are now high school students, but they will be working in the villages to run the Girls Groups and other Project elements. We think they will also serve as great role models for sticking with school.

A Scholarship for Strong Women

In the complicated moments of life, some people show great kindness in helping and supporting those in need. These kind and supportive people are few in our world all too often individualistic. Mali Rising’s Strong Woman Scholarships are a legacy of love from two incredible sisters in North America.

Villages Celebrating Girls' Education & The End of the School Year

This year the Girls Project has respected the tradition it has established during the first year of the project in 2016: to bring together, after nine months of hard work by girls, parents of students, teachers, and students to pay tribute to each person for their involvement during the school year. We call this event Feast for Feedback, because it is both a celebration and a chance for the whole village to be involved with the Girls Project. So, this year in the school yard of Kolimba on a Saturday like no other, parents of students, teachers, and girls shared a day of joy dedicated to the schooling of girls.

Inspire Yourself at the 50 Women Mixer!

Our work with our girls in Mali is personally my very favorite part of my job. And part of what I so love about this work is how it lets me connect with great women here in the United States too – women like you who light up whenever we talk about giving girls a chance to change the world. So, I’m really excited about a fun gathering coming up on Friday, August 23 (5:30 to 7:30 pm) here in Salt Lake City – our first ever 50 Women Mixer.

Drumroll Please! Girls Project Expands Into 5 New Villages

We are so, so excited here at Mali Rising! Why? We are preparing to launch the very successful Girls Project in five additional schools this fall!

The Way To Our Hearts? A Recipe From Mali

Note: One of the best parts of getting to know another culture is getting to know its food! Hindaty, our wonderful Girls Project Coordinator, shares her one of her favorite Mali recipes for your consideration. This month, I will share with you the recipes of one of my favorite dishes, called "yassa.” Yassa is a dish from West Africa that is prepared with onion. As in Mali we have large families, I will show you the recipe for yassa for 10 people

Remembering A Sister; Changing Young Women's Lives

When we lose someone we love, we often want to find a way to help their memory live on. There are many ways to keep that memory alive. I wanted to share one way a Mali Rising supporter, who is also my mom, decided to keep her sister’s memory alive. Both my mom and my aunt have been supporters of Mali Rising’s Girl Project, but I think we’ve all been surprised at just how much my mom’s idea for making sure my aunt’s belief in the power of young women lived on has mattered to us since we lost Aunt Chris.

Why Invest in Leadership Training for Girls?

For the last three years, Mali Rising has been working closely with girl students in three pilot villages.  You can't help a girl stay and succeed in school without helping her overcome certain obstacles that prevent her from advancing or succeeding. Leadership training is an opportunity for us to overcome these obstacles.  A leading girl must be able to express herself in public, defend her vision, lead a team, and defeat her shyness.
